World Surf League
Emissions Management Consultant
(April 2019 - Present)
Led the World Surf League (WSL) to become the first carbon neutral sports league in 2019.
With the ocean absorbing more than 90% of excess heat in the atmosphere, the WSL recognizes and appreciates its responsibility to protect and preserve marine and coastal habitats and communities in the face of climate change.
I have had the distinct privilege of working with the WSL and its nonprofit arm (PURE) to develop best practices in event sustainability management, emissions reductions, and carbon offsetting for all WSL operations, World Championship Tour events, and Big Wave Tour events since the 2018 season.
Devised operational and supply chain strategies that led to a 49% reduction in emissions compared to their baseline year (2018 - 2021).
Built a custom carbon footprint calculator and emissions factors database to calculate Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions from 5 international offices, 34 athletes, 20+ global events, and 200+ staff and vendors.
Custom calculator and data request forms saved WSL teams over 120 hours in data collection and emissions analysis per year.
Sourced a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality, third-party verified carbon offset projects based on alignment with various emissions sources and regional proximity to WSL offices and events.
Negotiated offset contracts with 11 vendors to date. Manage the WSL’s offset portfolio around the world including VCS-verified offset retirement.
Helped maintain annual reporting compliance as one of the first participants of the UN Sports For Climate Action Framework since 2019. Adhered to GHG Protocol guidelines for calculations and written emissions disclosures.
Currently creating their net zero goals in alignment with the SBTi Net Zero standard (2022) and authoring their climate action plan for the UN Sports For Climate Action Framework.
Wrote copy and advised on impact messaging for the live webcast presenters as well as the Stop Trashing Waves and We Are One Ocean campaigns.
Created presentations to executive leadership on carbon offset portfolio options, emissions reduction strategies, and emissions scope analyses.
Helped vet corporate sponsorships for environmental and social impact causes.
“WSL has chosen to focus on the specific threats to its ‘playing field.’ This risk-turned-opportunity approach to building a sustainability strategy is the best way for other leagues and teams to ‘find their wave,’ addressing the specific reasons to inspire action.”
